05 Dec 2017 : Frosty Fun
Frosty Fun

On Sunday 26th November Dunstable Road Runners hosted their XC event as part of the Three Counties League.

378 intrepid runners braved freezing temperatures and tackled the challenging course which included our favourite – Heartbreak!  And break more than a few hearts I imagine it did.

The weather had been somewhat wet which led to areas of the course being more lake-like than country-like but that’s the fun bit of XC (so they tell me!)

These events are only possible with the amazing efforts of the volunteers and DRR are famous for our friendliness and organisation. So a big thank you to everyone that helped out on the day.

So if you took part we hope you had a fab time, if you missed out then keep an eye out for next years date.

24 Nov 2017 : A huge thank you and a big welcome
A huge thank you and a big welcomeAs you may know Tara and Mark have sadly stepped down as our awesome Captain and Vice-Captain.  They have both been incredible in those roles, ever supporting and role modelling what makes DRR so great. I know we would all like to thank Tara and Mark greatly for all they have done for the club.

However with increasingly busy lives they have handed the baton over to the new team of Lisa Phee and her duo of Vice Captains : Lynn Russell and Alison Hunt.  I know you will all support them as they take on these new roles and do everything to help make them as successful as their predecessors xxx

Other changes to the committee are as follows:

- Claire McFauld steps down as joint Results Administrator to allow her to focus on her important studies (she remains an active member of the committee) ; Zoe Ewins has kindly agreed to assist Teresa with this task in the short term but we are looking for more help
- Darran Wilson, Claire Thomas and Clare Bates have also joined the committee

16 Nov 2017 : Superman Dan World Record Holder
Superman Dan World Record Holder

DRRs very on superman Dan Micola and following the Porto Marathon on 5th November he is now the holder of the World Record for the number of different countries he has run a marathon in in a year - a gob smacking 52 counties in 365 days!

Dan has run all over the world from the city streets of Belfast, the highlands of Kosovo and the history of Amman.

So please join me in congratulating him in such a fantastic achievement.

And he isn't done yet ....

30 Oct 2017 : A busy weekend for DRR
A busy weekend for DRR

It was a busy weekend for DRR with a large showing at both the Beachy Head and Love Luton events.

First to Beachy Head.. 30 brave souls took the journey to the south coast to take part in the 10k and Marathon events.  This is an event that makes our Dunstable Downs Challenge look flat!  Both events start up a great big hill that had people scrambling on hands and knees to get up (the good news is that you finish down this same hill).  It's an 'undulating' route with views out over the cliffs to the English Channel - and on sunny day like Saturday those views were breathtaking. It clearly is one that captures your heart as many of those 30 are already looking to book next year (and are on a recruitment drive to make it even bigger and better!)

Closer to home on Sunday saw the Love Luton 10k and Half Marathon.  Now in it's 5th year for the Half and inaugural 10K it was also popular with DRR.  Starting at Stockwood park and then heading our over the hills towards Luton Hoo before heading back for a town centre finish.  With 7 taking part in the 10k and 25 in the Half Marathon there were some fantastic performances.  A special shout out to Lee Murphy who took part in both the Beachy Head 10k and Luton Half!

So whether you are looking for something close to home or a bigger challenge a little further away the amazing support of DRR will make sure that wherever you go you won't be alone!

24 Oct 2017 : Mud, mud, glorious mud ...
Mud, mud, glorious mud ...It's that time of year again when not only are you allowed to run through puddles but it is positively encouraged - yes I'm talking about Cross Country.

The first event was hosted by Wellingborough & District AC and covered a distance of just over 5 miles.

Storm Brian did his best to help out and make sure there was plenty of the soggy mud to add to the fun. The course included crossing a 'river' (ok a stream) twice and there were many different techniques on show for this particular obstacle - from attempts to jump over it to full on jumping in with both feet.

Seventeen intrepid DRR turned out for the team including some XC first timers and a fantastic time was had by all!

The Men's team came in 11th place, with the women in 8th - giving an overall position of 10th.

If you fancy having a go then the next one is on 12th November and will be hosted by Wootton Road Runners.

18 Sep 2017 : Strong showing from DRR in Beds AAA 10 mile County Champs
Strong showing from DRR in Beds AAA 10 mile County Champs

Sunday 17th was the Bed County AAA Championships for the 10 mile distance, which took place as part of the 'undulating' (ok blooming hilly!) Leighton 10.

There were a good number of DRR out in force for this popular event and this reflected well in the results.

DRR placed 5th as a team and there were some fantastic individual results.

Paul Eggleton was first in the M60 category, followed in by Phillip Tubbs in second.  Ian Sage secure another first place, this time in the M65 Category.

The ladies also performed very well with Anne Golding achieving first place in the F55 category. Teresa Warren put in another great run with second place in F45.  Lastly, but by no means least, our wonderful club captain Tara Quinn was third in the F35 category.

If you fancy your chances next year you'd best get in that hill training!

05 Sep 2017 : Another amazing Challenge event
Another amazing Challenge event

Don't Limit Your Challenges, Challenge Your Limits!

That was the strap line for these years Dunstable Downs Challenge events and a sell out race lived up to it's name.

The stunning route took the runners out over the Downs, through Whipsnade and then out to Studham for the half and Great Gaddesden for the 20 and marathon.

There were checkpoints along the way to make sure that all runners were safe and accounted for as well as to offer refreshments.  The flapjacks were something GBBO would be proud of!

A warm welcome awaited all the runners on their return to Creasy with another great spread of refreshments for the all important refuelling.

Having run the half for the first time I can definitely say I'll be back next year p the only question is whether that will be for the half or the 20!

Results are available on the event page.

The challenge now has it's own great website here :

22 Jul 2017 : Friendship Mile - The spirit of DRR
Friendship Mile - The spirit of DRR

DRR really is a wonderful big family and nothing demonstrates that better than the annual friendship mile.  This is an event for club members, their families and a few special invited friends join together to remember club members who are sadly no longer with us and is a time to both show our support and celebrate the love of running we shared with them. All proceeds of the event are donated to charity and this year it raised over £650!!

Friday evening arrived with clear and warm weather at Creasy Park.  With some fantastic organisation 172 runners smoothly collected and pinned on their numbers before a bit of catching up and then over to the start.

As the start signal was given there was a dash from the start line by some of the amazingly speed runners we have, Darren Deed managing the mile in just 4:44! Those of us mere mortals behind ran or walked at whatever speed we were comfortable at.  Everyone was encouraging everyone else and the children really were inspiring to see how they gave it some real welly and looked to be having a great time.

It was two laps round and then down hill to the finish where everyone got a big cheer and there was a medal for every child.

Only once every runner had crossed the line did we move back inside for cake. Oh my there was a lot of cake, all lovingly baked (or bought ;-)) by club members and their family.  Plates were piled high and in a haze of sugar rush the catching up continued. Old friends chatted, new friends were made and in all were reminded why DRR is really special.

Then came the awards presented by Adi, who deserves a special mention for all the effort he put in to getting the event running so smoothly.  There were cool trophies for first place in each of the following categories:

- U11 boys : Jake Langford (7:07)

- U11 girls : Sienna Gibbons (7:45)

- U16 boys : Tom Fantini (6:44)

- U16 girls : Anna McGroary (8:33)

- Mens : Darren Deed (4:44)

- Womens : Rosie Keane (5:27)

Full results are on the event page.

It was my first DRR Friendship mile but it definitely will not be my last!

So to my fellow DRR member - you are truly incredible.  If you are reading this and are not a member then I can't recommend highly enough that you think about becoming one :-D
