We currently have two amazing club captains in Paula Kearney & Steve McAllister. I’m sure you all know them but we thought it would be nice to do a bit of a bio for each of them so we asked them to tell us a bit about themselves in their own words.
As relative latecomer to running (I was 42) I like to think that if I can do it, anyone can!
I have severe asthma, so occasionally you can hear me coming, with the wheezing, before you see me.
I joined Dunstable Road Runners in 2013 in the beginners group, where I could not run to the end of the road, gone from there and back again several times since, due to health and injuries, to my first ultra in 2021, including London marathon in 2016. It has been life changing, I am much healthier and made so many inspiring friends who are like minded, like the run, challenge and social aspect with travels, wine, cheese and cake!
I can honestly say that I don’t think I would have achieved what I have without the support of the wonderful band of volunteer leaders, fellow team mates and all who make the running of the club a success. Wearing the maroon vest at the start line, whether running or supporting is always such a buzz.
With DRR I have become a qualified Leader in Running (LiRF), I lead regularly, including ‘crocs’ (those recovering from injury or need support). I recently became a qualified visual guide and you can often see me on a Saturday morning volunteering at Houghton Hall parkrun, as a visual guide to an inspirational blind teenager. I am very proud to say that I am the joint team captain, with Steve.
I want to get as many members club involved in events as I can. As a club we participate in such a wide range of events that there should be something for everyone! Even if you don’t think something is for you, please give it a go. The worst that can happen is that you might have wasted a morning where you could have been doing something else, but on the flip side, you could have just discovered a whole new passion! The team spirit and camaraderie in our club is amazing and really is a great example of support. Very proud to be part of the pride that is the amazing DRR.
I’m Steven, Club Captain along side Paula.
I accidentally stumbled upon Dunstable Road Runners while trying to find a couch to 5k course in 2018. It was the best thing I did! I’ve now run multiple marathons and a 50miler. I much prefer to run off road, muddy trail runs and enjoy leading my fellow club runners into the Bedfordshire wilderness.
I’m a LIRF run leader and also Visually impaired guide runner.
I love to be outdoors and generally get distracted by beautiful scenery, running for the fun and smiles.
